StrainInSight Services

Our team of PhD-level experts is available to guide you every step of the way in your search for novel strains.

The microbiologists at StrainInSight specialize in:

  • Bacterial cultivation and preservation
  • Bacterial isolation, identification and dereplication via MALDI-TOF MS
  • Whole-genome sequence analyses and bioinformatics
  • Taxonomy and novel species descriptions

Our combined expertise makes us the perfect partner for a wide range of microbiology services. By pooling the resources and expertise of researchers at the LM-UGent lab and the BCCM/LMG Bacteria collection, we can tackle complex challenges and create custom solutions. We are actively involved in diverse ongoing research projects and immerse ourselves in new technologies and data analysis techniques on a daily basis.

Genome Database searches

No bioinformatician on your team? Not entirely at home in the world of BLAST and genome sequences?
Don't worry, we got you covered! We translate your research questions into specific queries for our Genome Database. Our team of bioinformaticians provides you with expert interpretation of the search results and guides you through the process of selecting strains of interest for your research and development projects.

Custom genome analyses

Our team of bioinformaticians can provide detailed analyses of specific genes or pathways, tailored to your needs. Do you already have genomes from your in-house strains? Through comparative genomics we can see how they relate to the strains in our collection. All data analysis is done on our in-house bioinformatics server, guaranteeing flexibility, confidentiality and fast results.

Other services

StrainInSight is embedded in the BCCM/LMG Bacteria Collection and the LM-UGent lab. These two groups work in synergy and each offer their own expert microbiology-related services.

BCCM/LMG Bacteria collection

The BCCM/LMG Bacteria collection offers several services for the identification, characterisation and preservation of bacteria:

  • Identification of your bacteria through:
    • - MALDI-TOF MS
    • - Partial or nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequencing
    • - Whole-genome sequencing
  • Characterization of your bacteria through:
    • - Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST-MIC)
    • - Phenotypic characterisation (API strips or BIOLOG GENIII MicroPlates)
  • Culturomics: customized cultivation-dependent microbial diversity studies using MALDI-TOF MS:
    • - Unraveling the microbial diversity present in your sample
    • - Screening your in-house strain collection for uniqueness
  • Deposit (safe, patent or public) of your bacteria
  • Preservation of your bacteria by freeze drying (glass ampoules, vials or customized)
  • Training and consultancy:
    • - Training on bacterial preservation
    • - Training on MALDI-TOF MS
